The nominating committee shall nominate one candidate for each office to be filled at the next convention. Diversity, PTA knowledge, commitment, and professional expertise shall be guiding principles when making nominations and appointments. The committee shall send the report of the nominations to the state PTA office to be forwarded to each member of the board of directors, and to each council and local PTA president, at least thirty (30) days before Massachusetts PTA Annual Convention. The committee shall report to the convention at the first general session, at which time additional nominations may be made from the floor provided the consent of the nominee has been secured in writing.”

The 2022 Massachusetts PTA Nominating Committee is proud to announce the 2022 Slate of Candidates. Candidates are selected based on their competencies as demonstrated in their Letter of Interest application and interviews.

President-elect – Kathresha Cureton

Kathresha Cureton currently serves on the Massachusetts PTA Board of Directors, and as a member of the Health, Safety and Wellness Committee. Kathresha draws from experience with more than 15 years in Health and Human Services, and earlier in her career, management, public affairs and outreach. She studied Psychology from the School of Social Behavioral Sciences at Mercy College and Art and Design from the School of Design at Pratt Institute. Active in the community, she served at the local level as a member on both Elementary and Middle School Councils; as the Middle/High School Vice President, PTA and Reflections Chair. She is a PTA Art Coordinator for the Hopkinton Elementary Schools, has volunteered in several other committees and civic leadership positions at every level.

With over 8 years of leadership experience she has also been involved in working as a liaison with support for parents and students including school programs, education and advocating for children. She continues to advance her training by attending conferences, seminars and workshops on both health and educational topics; including her passion for the arts.

Her children attend Hopkinton School District. We are very pleased to have her join our Leadership Team at Massachusetts PTA. “Life is never so busy that there is no time to help others.”

Vice President of Leadership – Christine Blinn

Christine serves as an Advisory Comittee member and is the current President for Old Sturbridge Academy PTSA. She previously served as Vice President, and was a founding board member of OSA PTSA.
Christine is a proud wife and mother to 3 children who are the reason she became so active in the PTSA and the Advisory Committee at their school. While serving on the PTSA Christine has worked hard on increasing membership and growing her local unit each year. When stepping into the role of President she dived into the trainings and webinars offered by the Massachusetts PTA to learn as much as she could about the true mission and values of the PTA, and bring those back to her local unit. She has played a role in increasing knowledge on the true mission of the PTA in her local unit and has also been working on getting a DEIA comittee started.
Personally she has a passion for advocacy and is very excited to begin working with the Massachusetts PTA.

Secretary – Christopher Gusman

Christopher Gusmán has over 25 years of experience in education. In addition to classroom teaching, his experience includes administration of regular, special, and alternative education. His undergraduate studies focused on mathematics and education. He received his Master’s Degree from the University of Texas in the field of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies and doctoral studies focus on special education and equity. As an educator, he served as a National Science Foundation Mentor Teacher, Massachusetts Teacher Association Board member, and is actively involved in equity leadership programs.  His use of technology integration and communication, in and out of the classroom, provided students the ability to have equitable footing and an inclusive classroom where academic and social emotional learning occurred.

Shaton Berry, National PTA’s Healthy Minds Ambassador.

Presenting on Thursday, April 7, 2022 Session 3; Be Mental Health Champions in Your Community: How to Run PTA Healthy Minds Programming

Shaton Berry currently serves as a member on the National PTA board of directors, and as a member of the National PTA leadership committee. She has been a PTA volunteer for over 16 years, most notably serving as chair for the National PTA Nominating and Leadership Recruitment Committee from 2017-2018, and serving as president of Michigan PTA from 2011-2013. Berry is also a certified Training Capacity Building Initiative (TCBI) and grassroots advocacy trainer through National PTA.

Berry truly believes in the mission and purposes of PTA and wants to ensure its place as a world class association for families. Her passion stems from her personal experience with unique family structures. She does not have any biological children; she raised her two younger brothers, Anthony and Deontae.

Professionally, Berry has worked for the Federal government as a public servant for over 19 years. She also serves as the Chief Operating Officer of Purposeful YOUth Detroit, a non-profit organization that focuses on the empowerment and mentoring of girls ages six to 18.

Yvonne Johnson, Nation PTA President Elect

Keynote Speaker on Saturday, April 9, 2022 at Annual Meeting

Yvonne Johnson is the President-Elect of the National PTA. As the President-Elect, Yvonne serves to

support the work of PTA. Yvonne currently serves as the chair of The National PTA NCAAC. Yvonne is a member of the National PTA Finance Committee and a member of the National PTA Governance Policy Committee. Yvonne has previously served as the Vice President of Advocacy for National PTA (2019-21) and chair of the National PTA Legislation Committee(2019-21). Yvonne also served on the Government Policy Task Force and the special working group of the Strategic Planning Committee during the 2019-21 term. Additionally, she has served as a local, region and state leader in her state of Delaware including State President(2011-13), National PTA Board of Directors (2015-17), National PTA Resolutions Committees(2015-19). and National PTA Field Service Committee(2013-15).

Yvonne’s personal motto is, “Never underestimate the power of a parent’s voice!” She has been involved in PTA for nearly 30 years, serving  Delaware PTA at the local, region and state level in many capacities. She has worked closely with elected officials and decision-makers for years, making a difference in the lives of all children.  Advocacy is her passion.

During Johnson’s term as NPTA VP of Advocacy she was the directing arm of all advocacy issues and served as the voice for families around education issues. Johnson and her Legislation Committee hosted NPTA’s first ever virtual legislative conference and led the effort to form the Public Policy Platform for the 117th Congress. She has successfully assisted in passing many education bills in the state of Delaware and was proud to have received the National PTA 2014 Shirley Igo Award recipient for leading a grassroots advocacy campaign around inclusive classrooms in a local school district. She continues to work with local, state, and federal officials on behalf of all children. Yvonne is committed to the vision and mission of PTA and will serve to move PTA forward. Yvonne is committed to being intentional with PTAs efforts to be more inclusive, diverse, and equitable. Yvonne will be the President of NPTA in June 2023.

Yvonne is the recipient of many recognitions for her work with the Delaware General Assembly including resolutions and proclamations presented to her by the Governor and Lt Governor as well as the Senate and House of Representatives of Delaware for her advocacy work around education issues.

Professionally, Johnson is an independent consultant, working with local school districts on school board reform, family engagement, education funding, grant writing, and community outreach. She is married to John and has three children, Ross(Stephanie), Jessica, and Derrick(Melody), and a grandson, Crew.

Nominations need to be submitted online to the Massachusetts PTA by Saturday, March 26, 2022 in order for the nominee to be awarded at the IN PERSON Awards Luncheon Celebration on Saturday, April 9, 2022 at the John Carver Inn in Plymouth, MA.

The Barbara Bailey Membership Award

Barbara Bailey was president of Massachusetts PTA in the early 1990’s.  During her term (and beyond!), she was able to help units manage memberships, bylaws, and conflicts.  To recognize her continued dedication to units across the state, we are honored to name this award after her.  Describe a successful membership drive that your unit completed during the past year.

The Carol Woodbury Leadership Award

Carol Woodbury was the president of the Massachusetts PTA from 1999-2002.  During her term, she inspired units across the state to work together and form positive relationships with school administrations and the community.  Carol continues to work on behalf of students, parents and teachers in Massachusetts where she works as a superintendent. Write a brief description of an inspiring leader in your local unit.  Tell us what makes that person inspiring and how it made a difference in your school/community.

Spirit of PTA Award

This award recognizes volunteers who promote and encourage the essence of PTA in their communities…every Child. one Voice.  Write a short essay describing someone you feel portrays the true essence of PTA. Members must be registered to accept the award. This award is open to a variety of leadership roles that your unit feels a member is deserving of recognition: newsletter, event planning, public relations, fundraising, etc. Your local dues can cover any convention expenses, as well.

Outstanding Advocate Award

[3 separate awards will be given- 1st for Student Advocate; 2nd for Member Advocate and 3rd for a Local Unit]

This award is given to a student, PTA member and Local Unit on the Local Unit level who has made significant contributions through Leadership/Service. In a short essay, describe how this person or unit exemplifies and stands out among others, how they adopted and carried out the mission of the PTA and volunteered their time to bring this to fruition.

Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award

[3 separate awards will be given- 1st for elementary; 2nd for middle school and 3rd for high school]

This award is to recognize a school teacher who is supportive, helpful, and personally involved in the PTA.

Outstanding Vice Principal of the Year Award

This award is to recognize a school vice principal who is supportive, helpful, and personally involved in the PTA.

Outstanding Principal of the Year Award

[3 separate awards will be given- 1st for elementary; 2nd for middle school and 3rd for high school]

This award is to recognize a school principal who is supportive, helpful, and personally involved in the PTA.

Outstanding Superintendent of the Year Award

This award is to recognize a school district superintendent who is supportive, helpful, and personally involved in the PTA.

Outstanding Counselor of the Year Award

This award is to recognize a  school counselor who is supportive, helpful, and embodies the mission of PTA.

Unsung Hero Award

This Unsung Hero has gone above and beyond the call of duty. This is a special person who has done extra special things for those in need.  This special person has done good work without receiving or expecting praise and recognition. In a short essay, describe how this person exemplifies and stands out among others, how they adopted and carried out the mission of the PTA. This person could be: ESP’s (Educational Support Professional), School Nurses, Crossing Guards, Guardians, Grandparents, Cafeteria Personal, Bus Drivers, School Bus Monitors, Custodian/Maintenance Personal, Lunch/Recess Monitors, etc.

Spotlight on Male Engagement Award

This award rewards those units who focus on ways to engage the fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, uncles, mentors, business partners, etc. In a short essay, describe how your PTA has utilized or involved fathers in your school or community.  Attach fliers/news articles/screenshots that are related.

Newsletter/ Communications (Examples of Publication Required)

Do you have a great way of keeping your PTA community informed? Whether it is newsletters that are sent home in a backpack, emails or a website that helps members keep up-to-date with your PTA happenings, show us how you communicate. Submit an example of your communication.

Community Membership Award

In order to bring into closer relations the school and community, i.e., places of worship, businesses, community leaders, etc., this award will be given to those PTAs that recruit twenty-five members from the community in addition to parents who also serve in community leadership positions.

Literacy Award

This Award is given to PTA units that promote literacy among students, families and the community; support the Media Center with activities that help make students better readers, writers and thinkers; and advance the ideals of learning through the written word.

General Membership Awards – No application needed:

• Golden Apple Award – Units with 100% membership of full-time certified teachers.
• One Voice for Every Child Award – Membership equal to or greater than number of students enrolled in the school.
• Massachusetts Honor Roll – Units with membership equal to or greater than 60% of students enrolled in the school.
• Challenge Award – Units with 5% membership increase over the previous year’s membership total.
• Making a Difference Award – Units with at least a 15% member increase over the previous year’s membership total.

All units which submit their dues and membership lists by November 15, will be placed in a drawing for $50 gift card. Two units will be selected.  

The following will be determined and awarded based on dues/membership submissions received by December 15, 2021

First unit to submit:  

a 15 member increase over last year’s total membership will receive a $25 gift card*

a 25 member increase over last year’s total membership will receive a $50 gift card*

a 30 member increase over last year’s total membership will receive a $75 gift card*

*Units will receive a TD Bank Visa Gift Card!

PTA is a volunteer driven organization. To provide all of the amazing programs and events a local PTA may provide for their community it requires many dedicated volunteers. To encourage and recognize the outstanding work of volunteers, Massachusetts State PTA (MA PTA) provides multiple individual recognition awards that local PTAs may choose to award to deserving volunteers. Local PTAs develop their own timeline for recognizing volunteers, nomination form(s), and rubric for determining eligibility. Each unit can submit up to 8 nominations, 1 for each candy listed below.

Nominations need to be submitted to the Massachusetts PTA by Saturday, March 26, 2022 in order for the nominee to be awarded at the IN PERSON Awards Luncheon Celebration on Saturday, April 9, 2022 at the John Carver Inn in Plymouth, MA. Each winner will receive a certificate and the corresponding candy for their award.

Driving Directions 

From the North

• Take Route 3 South to exit 6A (Route 44) 
• Turn right off the ramp and follow to the second traffic light 
• Turn right (Route 3A) and follow to the next traffic light 
• Turn right onto Leyden Street 
• The road immediately turns to the left, the John Carver Inn is on the right

From Logan International Airport

• Take The Callahan Tunnel toward Boston; stay right through the tunnel 
• Follow the signs to Route 93 South and loop around under the highway to the on-ramp to Cape Cod/South Shore 
• Follow Route 93 South for approximately 8 miles. Get into the left lane and exit left onto Route 3 South 
• Follow Route 3 South to exit 6A (Route 44) 
• Turn right off the ramp onto Route 44 East 
• Follow to the second traffic light and turn right onto Route 3A 
• Follow Route 3A to the next traffic light and turn right onto Leyden Street 
• The road immediately turns to the left, the John Carver Inn is on the right

From the Cape

• Take Route 6 West to the Sagamore Bridge – cross over bridge 
• Follow Route 3 North to exit 6 
• Take exit 6 and bear right onto Route 44 East 
• Follow to traffic light and turn right onto Route 3A 
• Follow Route 3A to the next traffic light and turn right onto Leyden Street 
• The road immediately turns to the left, the John Carver Inn is on the right
