Plan to arrive Wednesday night and you can experience it all! Summit activities start on Thursday, November 16,2017 at 7:30 a.m. and conclude by 2:30 p.m.

What can I expect if I attend this year’s Summit / What are the benefits of attending this year’s Summit?

Massachusetts PTA’s Health Summit has an exceptional line-up of health sessions and keynote speakers this year that will help all:

  • Learn to work better with principals, teachers and other community and family engagement leaders,
  • Increase student health,
  • Promote health and safety initiatives for schools and families, and
  • Advocate more effectively by learning about the legislative issues facing our children and schools.

In addition, our summit is an opportunity to meet other PTA members and healthcare leaders to share ideas, make new friends, renew acquaintances, and have fun!

What is the dress code?

Attire is business casual. Feel free to be comfortable in slacks, polo shirts, sweaters, blazers, blouses, and, most importantly, comfortable shoes. We do recommend you dress in layers as temperatures in meeting rooms can vary.

What are some recommendations from previous program attendees?

  1. Register early
  2. Share hotel rooms
  3. Wear comfortable shoes
  4. If coming with several people, plan out who attends what workshops, forums, coaching sessions, etc. to get the most information that you can take back to share
  5. Don’t be shy… talk to members from other areas to get new ideas and best practices

Will there be daycare offered at Convention?

Massachusetts PTA does not provide daycare services as a part of its Health Summit. P

Registration Questions 

How can I register for this year’s summit?

There are three ways to register:

  1. Online in Advance (by credit card). Go to Register. It is quick, easy, and secure. Online registration will open in June 2017.
  2. Mail in Advance (by check, or money order). Complete the registration form (last page of brochure) and mail it, postmarked by November 10, 2016, along with payment to the address listed on the registration form.
  3. On-site. Unfortunately because of counts that need to be submitted to the catering staff we are unable to accept on-site registration. You may pay on-site if you have pre-registered. The Registration Table will open at 7:30 am.

Can summit costs be covered by my PTA budget?

Summit registration fees and travel costs are legitimate expenses that can be included in your PTA budget. Many PTAs budget to attend training programs every year. While other organizations charge hundreds of dollars for a summit like ours – we keep registration fees low to allow as many PTA leaders, families and healthcare professionals as possible to attend. This is just one way Massachusetts PTA invests in its members and volunteer leaders. By seeking sponsors and outside funding to defray the costs of the summit, we can keep registration fees as low as $45 per member and as low as $55 per non-member.

How do I register multiple attendees at one time?

Group Rate Discounts
Save on registration rates when registering as a group. 2 or more MEMBERS must register at the same time to be considered a group.

I am NOT A MEMBER. Can I still attend the summit? If so, how much will it cost to attend as a nonmember?

Massachusetts PTA welcomes participation in the summit by non-PTA members. If you are not a PTA member, you are entitled only to the Non-Member rates above.

Registration Confirmation Questions

I have registered for this year’s summit. When and how will I receive my confirmation?

A registration confirmation email will be sent to you at the address provided immediately upon completion of your registration. Your confirmation email will include your registration receipt.

Cancellation Policy Questions

What is Massachusetts PTA’s cancellation policy for summit registrations?

Cancellation Policy

If you register in advance and find you cannot attend the summit, you must cancel your registration and request a refund. Requests for refunds must be submitted by the cancellation deadline of November 10, 2016. Refunds will not be processed after November 10th. Please allow 4-6 weeks for the refund to be issued. Please send your cancellation notice via email to Healthsummit@masspta.org

I can no longer attend this year’s convention – Can I transfer my registration to another person?

Massachusetts PTA will allow transfer of a registration to another person with appropriate notification prior to the start of the summit.

MCC Announces New Investment in Creative Youth Development & Music Education

(Springfield, MA) – The Mass Cultural Council is pleased to announce a $10,000 gift from the Gustavo Dudamel Foundation to deepen its support of creative youth development and music education.

Elected officials and cultural leaders from the Springfield region joined Mass Cultural Council and Springfield Public Schools students, teachers, and administrators at the Community Music School of Springfield today to announce the grant. The Schools’ partnership program, Sonido Música uses intensive, ensemble music to strengthen academic and social-emotional learning, and empowers a new generation of young people to work for social justice. Inspired by the Venezuelan El Sistema model, the program is funded through Mass Cultural Council’s SerHacer Program.

“Music and the arts are central to a complete education,” said Springfield Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, who also serves as Chair of the School Committee. “The Community Music School brings together students and families of all backgrounds to learn and grow through music making. We’re delighted to be a showcase for the work that the Mass Cultural Council and the Dudamel Foundation support.”

Established by Venezuelan-born conductor, Gustavo Dudamel, the Gustavo Dudamel Foundation is dedicated to supporting the arts and music education as catalysts in promoting a more compassionate and just society. “Music is unique in its power to unite and inspire,” said Dudamel. “By playing and listening together, music teaches discipline, cooperation, and an appreciation for beauty that enriches lives and binds communities. I am very pleased to collaborate with the Mass Cultural Council in expanding opportunities for children from diverse communities to be empowered through music.”

The Foundation’s grant to Mass Cultural Council will supplement the state agency’s support of 18 El Sistema-inspired youth music ensembles across Massachusetts, and helped to underwrite a student performance supported by the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and Conservatory Lab Charter School in Boston this past Saturday. SerHacer provides three-year, $15,000 annual grants to each of these programs, provides an instrument library through the Johnson String Project so all youth have quality instruments, and funds a three-year research study that seeks to document the impact of the El Sistema model on the lives of young people.

Mass Cultural Council Program Manager Rodrigo Guerrero said the Dudamel grant is another sign that Massachusetts is leading the way in creative youth development, an intentional practice that fosters active creative expression through the arts, humanities, and sciences, while developing core social, emotional, and life skills, for youth of all ages. Creative youth development approaches young people as active agents in their own growth, with inherent strengths and skills to be developed and nurtured. The overall goal is for culture to play a major role in supporting the growth of creative, productive, and independent citizens and thriving communities.

Recently 18 students from Massachusetts were selected to perform with Dudamel as part of the inaugural National Take a Stand Festival, a prestigious music camp hosted by the Los Angeles Philharmonic in partnership with Bard College and the Longy School of Music of Bard College. After a week of intense study, students will perform with Dudamel at the Walt Disney Concert Hall on July 22.

“We are grateful to the Dudamel Foundation for its vote of confidence in the Mass Cultural Council and, more importantly, the incredible work that the young people and educators in our SerHacer Programs are doing across the Commonwealth,” said Guerrero.

Mass Cultural Council has been a national leader in this work for more than two decades. Its YouthReach Program integrates substantive out-of-school arts learning opportunities into a collaborative community response to the needs of young people – especially at-risk youth. More than 40 YouthReach programs have been honored over the years with National Arts & Humanities Youth Program awards from the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities. In 2014, Mass Cultural Council hosted the National Summit on Creative Youth Development, which shone a national spotlight on the work of YouthReach and generated an ongoing national partnership between Mass Cultural Council, the National Guild for Community Arts Education, the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities, and Americans for the Arts. Later that year Massachusetts became the first state in the nation to create a public support system for El Sistema-inspired work via SerHacer.

“The arts are essential to a well-rounded education, and the Community Music School is a cornerstone of arts education in Springfield. The Dudamel Foundation is yet another partner who has noticed the great things happening here and wants to help build on them,” said Senator Eric P. Lesser. “I am glad that the State Senate is a strong supporter of our arts programs, and I will work to continue that support for programs that are shaping and changing young people’s lives.”

2017-18 Grant Opportunities

grant-opportunitiesThe Mass Cultural Council is a state agency supporting the arts, sciences, and humanities, to improve the quality of life in Massachusetts and its communities. It pursues its mission through a combination of grants, services, and advocacy for nonprofit cultural organizations, schools, communities, and artists. The following grant opportunities are currently available.


STARS Residencies

The 2017-2018 STARS Residencies online application will open at 4:00 pm on Thursday October 5, 2017. Applications will be reviewed in the order received. STARS Program guidelines will be posted July 21, 2017. STARS Residencies provide grants of $500-$5,000 to schools to support creative learning residencies of three days or more in the arts, sciences, and humanities.

Big Yellow School Bus

The 2017-2018 Big Yellow School Bus online application will open at 4:00 pm on Wednesday, September 20, 2017. Schools are eligible for one grant per school year. Big Yellow School Bus provides grants to help schools meet the transportation costs of student educational field trips to non-profit cultural institutions and events across the Commonwealth.

Local Cultural Council Program

Our Local Cultural Council (LCC) Program supports thousands of community-based projects in the arts, humanities, and sciences annually, with nearly half of the $3 million in LCC grants benefiting education. Each of the Commonwealth’s 329 LCCs are accepting applications by October 17, 2017. Individuals, schools, and cultural organizations are encouraged to apply for support. Find your LCC, read the guidelines, and access applications online.

Creative Youth Development
The next round of YouthReach and SerHacer guidelines will be available September 1, 2017. YouthReach and SerHacer provide funding for a three year period to programs that infuse the arts, sciences, and humanities with principles of youth development. Application deadlines for the next three year cycle are:

YouthReach: For New Applicants January 15, 2018. For Returning Applicants May 1, 2018
All applicants to SerHacer: February 15, 2018
