2. Create an original work inspired by the theme.
3. Celebrate your achievements and win prizes!

Enter according to local program guidelines and deadlines. For samples of national award-winning works, visit our virtual exhibit.

Program Theme

The 2018-2019 program theme is “Look Within” Encourage students to think about and explore the theme. Teachers can use the theme with classroom lessons while parents can use the theme to spark conversation at home. Students can participate in the annual Theme Search Contest according to State PTA Reflections Program guidelines. One winning theme will be selected in 2020 and used as the Reflections program theme during the 2021-2022 school year.

Title and Artist Statement

Judges will consider your title and artist statement to learn more about your original work and creative interpretation of the theme. Give your work a title that stands out and describe how your work relates to your own personal interpretation of the theme.

Use these guiding questions to help you write an artist statement:

  • How does your work relate to the theme?
  • What is your personal connection to the theme?
  • What did you use to create your work (e.g., supplies, technology, instrumentation, props, etc.)
  • What/who was your inspiration?

Review Criteria

Judges look for personal interpretations on the program theme that best exemplify creativity and technical skill.

  1. Interpretation: How closely the piece relates to the theme, based on the work itself and the artist statement.
  2. Creativity: How creative and original the piece is in its conception of the theme and its presentation.
  3. Technique: The level of skill demonstrated in the basic principles/techniques of the arts area.

Board of Directors old

All members of the Massachusetts PTA Board of Directors are volunteers who are here to serve you and to work for children throughout Massachusetts and our country. Meet your Massachusetts PTA Board of Directors.

Karen DeRoche, President

National Council of States Representative

k.deroche@masspta.org

Karen is the proud adoptive mother of 2 boys and started her work in her local unit, Rehoboth PTSA, more than 15 years ago.  She proudly served on many committees and held the offices of Rehoboth PTSA’s President, Secretary, Vice President (Palmer River and Beckwith) and Membership Chair. Passionate  about her work at PTA, she has raised awareness for children with disabilities, adoptive children, children with special education needs, and those who “fall between the cracks”. With over 30 years of nursing experience, she currently works as a Nurse Case Manager and spends her weekends as a proud hockey mom.  She is very excited to continue her work with Massachusetts PTA in this role, and continues to serve on many committees at the Massachusetts PTA and in her local community.  Karen is passionate about advocating for all children, and believes strongly in PTA’s motto….”Every Child, One Voice.” Together let’s make a difference!!

Kathresha Cureton, President-Elect

k.cureton@masspta.org

Kathresha Cureton currently serves on the Massachusetts PTA Board of Directors, and as a member of the Health, Safety and Wellness Committee. Kathresha draws from experience with more than 15 years in Health and Human Services, and earlier in her career, management, public affairs and outreach. She studied Psychology from the School of Social Behavioral Sciences at Mercy College and Art and Design from the School of Design at Pratt Institute. Active in the community, she served at the local level as a member on both Elementary and Middle School Councils; as the Middle/High School Vice President, PTA and Reflections Chair. She is a PTA Art Coordinator for the Hopkinton Elementary Schools, has volunteered in several other committees and civic leadership positions at every level.

With over 8 years of leadership experience she has also been involved in working as a liaison with support for parents and students including school programs, education and advocating for children. She continues to advance her training by attending conferences, seminars and workshops on both health and educational topics; including her passion for the arts.

Her children attend Hopkinton School District. We are very pleased to have her join our Leadership Team at Massachusetts PTA. “Life is never so busy that there is no time to help others.”

Christine Blinn, Vice President of Leadership

k.blinn@masspta.org

Christine serves as an Advisory Comittee member and is the current President for Old Sturbridge Academy PTSA. She previously served as Vice President, and was a founding board member of OSA PTSA.

Christine is a proud wife and mother to 3 children who are the reason she became so active in the PTSA and the Advisory Committee at their school. While serving on the PTSA Christine has worked hard on increasing membership and growing her local unit each year. When stepping into the role of President she dived into the trainings and webinars offered by the Massachusetts PTA to learn as much as she could about the true mission and values of the PTA, and bring those back to her local unit. She has played a role in increasing knowledge on the true mission of the PTA in her local unit and has also been working on getting a DEIA committee started. Personally she has a passion for advocacy and is very excited to begin working with the Massachusetts PTA.

Ashley Ferrini, Secretary

secretary@masspta.org

Ashley is currently an education support professional in the Middleborough public school system. Previously she has assisted in creating a private kindergarten program where she specialized in diverse learning styles and opportunities. She is very passionate about making sure all students have an equitable education opportunity and works tirelessly to ensure that no child should be left behind for any reason.

Ashley presently holds a vice president position at her local elementary school and has previously held leadership positions such as president and secretary, as well as chair and committee roles. During her time in the PTA, Ashley has strongly focused on creating a bond between the schools and the local community. She understands that collaborating with the community and bridging communication gaps are a critical step in the success of all children’s futures.

When she is not spending time with her two beautiful children, Ashley is giving back to the community, including volunteering in the schools, girl scouts, and on the field. The “EveryChild. OneVoice” line resonates personally with Ashley because, although diversity is a known fact, to include others is something we should all choose to do daily. As a leader, she will strive to spread the message to embrace the openness of acceptance and not just tolerate it.

PTA Reflections Art Program

Membership in the Massachusetts PTA provides the opportunity to participate in the National PTA Reflections program. This competition encourages students to explore the arts and express themselves by providing positive recognition for their artistic efforts. Since it was founded in 1969 by Mary Lou Anderson, millions of students have benefited from this program.

Reflections Awards Program Students in Pre-K through grade 12 create theme-based artwork in dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography or visual arts.

Massachusetts PTA encourages you to register your program with National PTA. Visit pta.org/home/programs/reflections to register. Once you have registered, you will have access to a digital toolkit of resources from the National PTA and the opportunity to connect with other PTA Reflections leaders.

Registration opened on July 1, 2024, and will close on February 7, 2025 (we recommend you close your local Reflections Program by January 17, 2025 so you have time to judge and get winners to the State).

SUBMISSIONS TO MA PTA DUE BY FEBRUARY 7, 2025 HERE.

This year’s theme is “Accepting Imperfection”

That’s the theme for the 2024-2025 Reflections Art Program which has been bringing the arts to life for more than 10 million students since 1969. Massachusetts PTA and its members, families, and kids are at the forefront of this amazing program, which increases community awareness of the importance of arts in education.

PTA Reflections encourages students of all ages to:

  • Unleash creative talents and be inspired
  • Express themselves imaginatively in their artwork
  • Experience the fun and joy of making art
  • Tap into critical-thinking skills to create art inspired by the annual theme
  • Receive positive recognition for their original works of art.

Participating is Easy, Exciting and Empowering

All students, Pre-K through Grade 12, attending PTA schools sponsoring the program are invited to participate and submit original artwork in one of six areas:

  • Dance Choreography
  • Literature
  • Photography
  • Film Production
  • Music Composition
  • Visual Arts

Artworks are submitted first to school-level PTAs, where they are first recognized, celebrated and judged by five grade-level divisions, while a non-judged Special Artist division celebrates student artists with special needs. The final artworks submitted to Massachusetts PTA by local school units are then considered for Awards of Excellence, Awards of Merit and Honorable Mentions. Awards of Excellence entries then go on to represent Massachusetts in the final National PTA judging round.

National-level Outstanding Interpretation honorees are recognized at the National PTA Convention, plus their artwork, along with any National Award of Excellence and Merit winners, is featured in Reflections’ popular traveling national exhibit. See the winners.

Theme Search

National PTA Reflections sponsors a student-focused Theme Search Contest annually to determine a future program theme. Children and youth can submit a national theme to serve as the inspiration for Reflections artists and their original works. Students submitting the winning theme receive $100 and recognition at the National PTA Convention.

The theme search for 2026-27 is now open. Please have your theme entries to MA PTA by November 24, 2025 for submission to the National PTA. Theme Search Entry Form
